Faux Real: A Look at 3 Alternative-Leather Options
Posted: Jan 22 2014
If you’re thinking of opting for something synthetic this season, you’re right on trend. But with so many leather alternatives out there, it’s tough to know which one to pick. Here’s a rundown of your options.
Thanks to all the advances in textile technology, leather alternatives are looking more real every day. The term “vegan” suggests this eco-friendly option – often made of polyurethane – was manufactured without animal materials. So consider the term “vegan leather” to be the right-now name for synthetics.
First, you should know that “faux” is synonymous with “vegan.” Both suggest a synthetic base. And ever since imitation leather became widely accepted, the prefix “faux” has been added to it. Why, you ask? Well, for one, a French accent makes everything sound more expensive. So, in the fashion industry, we’ve come to make friends with the word “faux.”
I try to only use this term out of necessity. For some reason, the hybrid word for plastic-leather reminds me of Michael Jackson circa 1982. Don’t get me wrong, I love the King of Pop in all his embellished-glove glory. But this material is best worn as an accent, not head to toe.
